Standard Workflow - Terrain Tools

Purpose

Use Terrain Tools to create, edit, analyse, and coordinate terrain surfaces within a Revit project. Terrain modelling supports landscape design, grading studies, planting design, earthworks coordination, visualisation, and documentation.

Terrain Tools enable designers to work with existing and proposed landforms while maintaining coordination with planting, hardscape, drainage, and site infrastructure.

Prerequisites

Before using Terrain Tools:

  1. The project survey information has been established.
  2. Site coordinates and project units have been verified.
  3. Existing terrain data has been imported or created.
  4. Required topographic information is available.
  5. Appropriate terrain display settings are enabled.

Outcome: The project is ready for terrain modelling and analysis.


1. Create or Import Existing Terrain

  1. Open the project model.
  2. Access the Terrain Tools workspace.
  3. Import survey data or use existing topographic information.
  4. Generate the initial terrain surface.
  5. Review the terrain representation in plan and 3D views.
  6. Confirm surface elevations match survey information.

Outcome: Existing site terrain is accurately represented within the model.


2. Review Terrain Geometry

  1. Display the terrain surface in a suitable view.
  2. Review:
    • Spot elevations
    • Surface contours
    • Slope transitions
    • Site boundaries
  3. Identify any irregularities or missing information.
  4. Correct issues before progressing.

Outcome: Existing terrain accurately reflects the surveyed site conditions.


3. Create Proposed Terrain

  1. Duplicate or develop a proposed terrain model.
  2. Apply required grading changes.
  3. Modify elevations to suit:
    • Building levels
    • Roads
    • Paths
    • Drainage requirements
    • Landscape design objectives
  4. Review the results in plan, section, and 3D views.

Outcome: A coordinated proposed terrain model is established.


4. Edit Surface Levels

  1. Select the proposed terrain surface.
  2. Use the terrain editing tools to:
    • Add elevation points
    • Move points
    • Adjust levels
    • Refine grades
  3. Continuously review surface behaviour.
  4. Resolve abrupt grade changes where necessary.

Outcome: Terrain levels meet project performance and design requirements.


5. Analyse Slopes and Grades

  1. Run terrain analysis tools.
  2. Review:
    • Slopes
    • Gradients
    • Drainage flow paths
    • Areas of steep terrain
  3. Identify locations requiring design adjustment.
  4. Modify terrain where design standards are exceeded.

Outcome: Terrain performs correctly for access, drainage, and maintenance requirements.


6. Coordinate Terrain with Site Elements

  1. Display:
    • Terrain surfaces
    • Buildings
    • Hardscape elements
    • Planting
    • Drainage infrastructure
  2. Review potential conflicts.
  3. Adjust terrain or site components as required.
  4. Verify finished levels remain coordinated.

Outcome: All site elements work together within the proposed landform.


7. Integrate Terrain with Planting Design

  1. Review planting areas against proposed terrain.
  2. Confirm trees, shrubs, and seed mixes are correctly positioned.
  3. Check root balls, planting pits, and protection zones where applicable.
  4. Adjust terrain levels to support planting requirements.

Outcome: Terrain and planting designs are fully coordinated.


8. Review Cut and Fill Implications

  1. Compare existing and proposed terrain.
  2. Assess areas of:
    • Cut
    • Fill
    • Retained terrain
  3. Review the impact on:
    • Construction
    • Drainage
    • Planting
    • Site access
  4. Refine terrain where necessary.

Outcome: Earthworks requirements are understood and coordinated.


9. Create Terrain Documentation

  1. Generate views showing:
    • Existing terrain
    • Proposed terrain
    • Contours
    • Spot levels
    • Grading information
  2. Produce supporting sections and 3D views.
  3. Verify consistency across all drawings.

Outcome: Terrain information is ready for project documentation.


10. Publish Project Deliverables

  1. Add terrain views to project sheets.
  2. Include:
    • Existing Site Plans
    • Proposed Grading Plans
    • Sections
    • Coordination Drawings
  3. Complete final design reviews.
  4. Publish project documentation.

Outcome: Terrain design information is fully coordinated and issued as part of the project deliverables.
