Terrain

Purpose

The Terrain Tools in CS ArtisanRV are designed to help landscape professionals create, modify, and coordinate site terrain efficiently within Revit. While Revit has long provided tools for modelling topography, historically these capabilities have not fully met the needs of landscape architects and site designers, often requiring time-consuming workarounds to represent landscape features, earthworks, and construction build-ups accurately.

Revit's original Toposurfaces provided a visually effective representation of terrain but were essentially draped surfaces with no physical depth, volume, or construction intelligence. The introduction of TopoSolids in Revit 2024 marked a major advancement in site modelling, enabling terrain to be represented as true three-dimensional objects with thickness, materials, cut and fill volumes, and more meaningful construction information. Subsequent enhancements, including Sub-Divides and vertical offset controls, have further improved the ability to model complex landscapes and layered site construction within a BIM workflow.

Building on these developments, CS ArtisanRV Terrain Tools provide a range of productivity features that streamline terrain modelling and management. Users can automatically convert paths, boundaries, and designated areas into modelled 3D terrain elements, reducing manual modelling effort while maintaining design accuracy. This allows landscape features such as mounds, swales, embankments, terraces, and planted areas to be generated quickly and consistently.

The tools also recognise the importance of Floors within landscape-led BIM projects. In many schemes, particularly podium developments, roof gardens, plazas, and structures where landscape is constructed above occupied spaces, floor elements are often used to represent landscape build-ups and construction assemblies. CS ArtisanRV enables users to dynamically convert Topos to Floors and Floors to Topos, preserving essential geometry, levels, and depth profiles. This provides greater flexibility for design development, interdisciplinary coordination, and documentation.

Within this section of the Help system, you will learn how to:

  • Create modelled terrain from paths and defined areas.
  • Convert TopoSolids to Floors and Floors to TopoSolids.
  • Preserve and manage terrain geometry during conversion workflows.
  • Create and edit landscape forms and graded terrain features.
  • Utilise terrain modelling tools for podium and complex site projects.
  • Improve coordination and documentation within multidisciplinary BIM environments.

By extending Revit's terrain modelling capabilities, CS ArtisanRV Terrain Tools help landscape professionals develop more accurate, intelligent, and constructible site models while improving collaboration across the wider project team.


 

Usage

Terrain tools are available from the Terrain Panel.

Terrain Tools include Linear Path - Area Pad  Topo to Floor  - Overlay Region .
