Standard Workflow - Place Spot Dims

Purpose

Use Place Spot Dimensions to automatically place spot level annotations on terrain, floors, topography, grading surfaces, and other landscape elements within the Revit model. Spot Dimensions provide clear elevation information for design coordination, grading verification, construction documentation, and quality assurance.

This workflow helps ensure that critical levels are accurately communicated throughout the project documentation set.


Prerequisites

Before placing Spot Dimensions:

  1. The relevant terrain, floor, or topographic elements have been created.
  2. Project levels and coordinate systems have been verified.
  3. Appropriate Spot Dimension styles are available within the project.
  4. Site grading and elevation design have been reviewed.
  5. Views intended for annotation are configured correctly.

Outcome: The project is ready for elevation annotation.


1. Review the Areas Requiring Annotation

  1. Open the project model.
  2. Identify areas where elevation information is required.
  3. Typical locations include:
    • Finished ground levels
    • Topographic surfaces
    • Floor surfaces
    • Hardscape areas
    • Planting areas
    • Grading transitions
    • Key construction interfaces
  4. Confirm documentation requirements.

Outcome: Elevation annotation locations are identified.


2. Prepare the View

  1. Open the appropriate plan, section, or 3D view.
  2. Verify that:
    • Relevant elements are visible.
    • Annotation categories are enabled.

3. Launch the Place Spot Dimension Tool

4. Select Target Elements

  1. Choose the surfaces or elements to be annotated.
  2. Typical targets include:

  3. Verify the selected geometry contains valid elevation data.

5. Place Spot Dimensions

  2. Review each placed annotation.
