Standard Workflow - Fencing and Railings

Purpose

Use Fencing and Railings to create, edit, and manage boundary features, security fencing, decorative railings, balustrades, retaining edge protection, and other linear site infrastructure within a Revit landscape model.

The workflow enables designers to place fencing and railing systems along defined paths while maintaining coordination with terrain, hardscape, planting, structures, and project documentation.


Prerequisites

Before creating Fencing and Railings:

  1. Site layouts and boundaries have been established.
  2. Terrain and grading models have been reviewed.
  3. Required fence and railing types are available within the project.
  4. Design requirements and specifications have been identified.
  5. Appropriate visibility settings are enabled.

Outcome: The project is ready for fencing and railing design.


1. Review Project Requirements

  1. Confirm the purpose of the fencing or railing.
  2. Identify the required application:
    • Boundary fencing
    • Security fencing
    • Park fencing
    • Decorative railings
    • Balustrades
    • Retaining edge protection
    • Access control systems
  3. Review applicable project standards and specifications.

Outcome: Design requirements are established before modelling begins.


2. Select the Required Fence or Railing Type

  1. Open the fencing and railing tools.
  2. Review available system types.
  3. Select the most appropriate option based on:
    • Height requirements
    • Construction standards
    • Material specifications
    • Aesthetic requirements
  4. Confirm the selected type.

Outcome: The correct fence or railing system is ready for placement.


3. Define the Placement Path

  1. Identify the route for the fencing or railing.
  2. Create the path by:
    • Sketching a new route, or
    • Selecting existing model geometry.
  3. Verify alignment with:
    • Site boundaries
    • Walkways
    • Roads
    • Property limits
    • Retaining structures
  4. Review the proposed layout.

Outcome: A placement path is defined for the system.


4. Create the Fencing or Railing

  1. Execute the placement command.
  2. Generate the fencing or railing along the defined path.
  3. Review the resulting geometry.
  4. Confirm posts, panels, rails, and transitions are created correctly.

Outcome: The fence or railing system is placed within the model.


5. Adjust System Properties

  1. Select the newly created system.
  2. Review and adjust:
    • Height
    • Offset
    • Panel spacing
    • Post spacing
    • Materials
    • Construction details
  3. Apply project-specific requirements.

Outcome: The system accurately reflects the design intent.


6. Coordinate with Terrain

  1. Display:
    • Existing terrain
    • Proposed terrain
    • Grading surfaces
  2. Review the interaction between the fence and the ground profile.
  3. Verify:
    • Step transitions
    • Sloping sections
    • Post positions
    • Clearance requirements
  4. Adjust where necessary.

Outcome: The fencing system follows site conditions correctly.


7. Coordinate with Landscape Elements

  1. Review fencing and railings alongside:

  2. Resolve any clashes or clearance issues.

8. Review Quantities and Specifications

9. Produce Documentation

  2. Add views and schedules to project sheets.
  3. Review graphic consistency and annotations.

10. Final Quality Review

  1. Review the fencing and railing system in:

    • Elevations
    • 3D views
  2. Verify:
    • Alignment accuracy
    • Terrain coordination

  3. Resolve any remaining issues before publication.
