Standard Workflow - Create Detailed Planting

Purpose

Detailed Planting is used to create, model, quantify, and document individual planting elements within a Revit project. This workflow supports the placement of trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, and other planting types as individual specimens, groups, hedges, avenues, and planting areas, enabling accurate design development, scheduling, and construction documentation.


Prerequisites

Before creating Detailed Planting:

  1. The project site model has been established.
  2. Required planting palettes have been created and loaded.
  3. Plant selections have been approved.
  4. Relevant planting schedules and tag families are available.
  5. Site surfaces, topography, floors, or planting areas are prepared for planting placement.

Phase 1: Prepare Planting Content

1. Review the Planting Palette

  1. Open the project palette.
  2. Confirm all required planting types are available.
  3. Verify:
    • Botanical Names
    • Common Names
    • Plant Categories
    • Sizes and Specifications
  4. Remove obsolete selections if required.

Verification: The palette contains all approved planting content required for the project.


2. Configure Planting Display Settings

  1. Review project visibility settings.
  2. Confirm the required planting representation is active.
  3. Verify plan and 3D display requirements.
  4. Apply project view templates where required.

Verification: Planting elements will display correctly in all project views.


Phase 2: Create Detailed Planting

3. Launch the Create Planting Command

  1. Open the ArtisanRV planting tools.
  2. Select Create Planting.
  3. Choose the required plant type from the active palette.

Typical planting categories include:

  • Trees
  • Shrubs
  • Perennials
  • Grasses
  • Groundcovers
  • Climbers

Verification: The selected plant type is ready for placement.


4. Place Individual Specimen Plants

Use specimen placement when individual plants require precise positioning.

  1. Select the plant type.
  2. Choose Specimen placement.
  3. Place individual plants within the model.
  4. Adjust locations as required.

Typical uses:

  • Feature trees
  • Entrance planting
  • Architectural focal points
  • Signature planting

Verification: Individual plants are positioned accurately within the design.


5. Create Plant Groups

Use grouped planting for repeated plant arrangements.

  1. Select the plant type.
  2. Choose grouped placement.
  3. Define spacing and arrangement.
  4. Place the planting group.

Verification: Multiple plants are created according to the defined layout.


6. Create Hedges

  1. Select a suitable hedge species.
  2. Choose the Hedge placement option.
  3. Draw the hedge alignment.
  4. Define spacing requirements.
  5. Complete placement.

Verification: Continuous hedge planting is generated automatically.


7. Create Avenues

Use avenue planting for aligned tree layouts.

  1. Select the required tree species.
  2. Choose Avenue placement.
  3. Define the path or alignment.
  4. Enter the spacing requirements.
  5. Complete placement.

  • Boulevards
  • Shared spaces
  • Formal landscape designs

Verification: Trees are distributed evenly along the alignment.


8. Create Planting Areas

Use planting areas where mass planting is required.

  1. Select the planting type.
  2. Choose Area placement.
  3. Draw the planting boundary.
  4. Specify spacing and density.
  5. Complete the planting area.

Typical applications:

  • Shrub beds
  • Groundcover zones
  • Perennial planting
  • Ecological planting

Verification: Plants are distributed within the defined area according to project requirements.


Phase 3: Modify Detailed Planting

9. Edit Planting Elements

  1. Select a plant or planting area.
  2. Open the Edit Planting tools.
  3. Modify:
    • Plant Type
    • Spacing
    • Quantities
    • Layout
    • Notes
  4. Save changes.

Verification: Updated planting information appears correctly in the model.


10. Refine Plant Locations

  1. Review planting layouts in plan and 3D views.
  2. Adjust positions where required.
  3. Verify clearances to:
    • Buildings
    • Paths
    • Utilities
    • Structures
  4. Save modifications.

Verification: Planting coordinates with all site elements.


Phase 4: Planting Documentation

11. Tag Planting

  1. Open the Tag Planting command.
  2. Select planting elements.
  3. Apply the appropriate tag style.
  4. Adjust leader placement where necessary.

Typical tag information includes:

  • Plant Reference
  • Botanical Name
  • Quantity
  • Specification Information

Verification: All planting is clearly identified on drawings.


12. Generate Plant Schedules

Create schedules showing:

  • Plant Reference
  • Botanical Name
  • Common Name
  • Quantity
  • Plant Size
  • Category
  • Specification Notes

Review schedule totals and consistency.

Verification: Schedule quantities match the model.


13. Review Quantities

  1. Verify planting counts.
  2. Check area calculations.
  3. Confirm spacing assumptions.
  4. Review procurement quantities.

Verification: Quantities accurately represent project requirements.


Phase 5: Coordination and Quality Assurance

14. Review Planting Design

Confirm:

  • Planting meets the approved design intent.
  • Appropriate species have been used.
  • Spacing requirements have been achieved.
  • Visual composition is balanced.
  • Maintenance considerations have been addressed.

Verification: The planting scheme is design-ready.


15. Coordinate Across Views

Review:

  • Site Plans
  • Enlarged Plans
  • Planting Layouts
  • Sections
  • Elevations
  • 3D Views

Verification: Planting appears correctly throughout the project.


16. Final Documentation Review

Verify:
