Standard Workflow - Proposed Root Balls

Purpose

Use Proposed Root Balls and Root Barriers to model tree planting requirements, assess underground coordination, protect adjacent infrastructure, and document tree establishment requirements within the Revit landscape model.

Root Balls represent the excavation and root mass associated with a proposed tree, while Root Barriers are used to manage root growth and protect nearby assets such as utilities, paving, structures, and highways.


Prerequisites

Before creating Root Balls and Root Barriers:

  1. Proposed trees have been placed in the model.
  2. Tree species and planting specifications have been assigned.
  3. Root ball dimensions are available from project standards, supplier information, or planting specifications.
  4. Areas requiring root protection have been identified.
  5. Appropriate visibility settings are enabled.

Outcome: The project is ready for root zone modelling and coordination.


1. Place Proposed Trees

  1. Open the planting design model.
  2. Select the required tree type from the planting palette.
  3. Place trees in their proposed locations.
  4. Verify tree species, specifications, and planting sizes.

Outcome: Proposed trees are established within the model.


2. Generate Proposed Root Balls

  1. Open the Root Ball tools.
  2. Select one or more proposed trees.
  3. Run the Create Proposed Root Balls command.
  4. Allow ArtisanRV to generate root balls using the associated planting information.
  5. Review the generated root ball geometry in plan and 3D views.

Outcome: Root balls are automatically generated and linked to the selected trees.


3. Review and Adjust Root Ball Dimensions

  1. Select a root ball.
  2. Open the editing tools or properties.
  3. Review:
    • Root ball diameter
    • Root ball depth
    • Shape and extents
    • Associated tree
  4. Modify dimensions where required by specification.
  5. Save the changes.

Outcome: Root ball geometry accurately reflects project requirements.


4. Create Root Barriers

  1. Open the Root Barrier tools.
  2. Select the proposed tree or associated root ball.
  3. Choose the Root Barrier command.
  4. Define the barrier alignment adjacent to:
    • Utilities
    • Roads and highways
    • Footways and paving
    • Building foundations
    • Retaining structures
  5. Specify:
    • Barrier type
    • Depth
    • Length
    • Offset from root ball where required
  6. Complete the placement.
  7. Review the barrier in plan, section, and 3D views.

Outcome: Root barriers are created and positioned to control future root growth.


5. Review Coordination

  1. Display:
    • Root balls
    • Root barriers
    • Underground services
    • Structures
    • Hard landscape elements
  2. Review potential conflicts.
  3. Adjust:
    • Tree position
    • Root ball dimensions
    • Root barrier alignment
  4. Resolve any identified coordination issues.

Outcome: Planting infrastructure is fully coordinated with the wider project model.


6. Control Visibility

  1. Open ArtisanRV Visibility Options.
  2. Enable or disable:
    • Proposed Root Balls
    • Root Barriers
  3. Review the display in:
    • Planting plans
    • Coordination plans
    • Sections
    • 3D views
  4. Confirm graphical representation is suitable for documentation.

Outcome: Root infrastructure is displayed appropriately for each view type.


7. Schedule Root Infrastructure

  1. Open project schedules.
  2. Refresh planting schedules where required.
  3. Review:
    • Tree type
    • Root ball size
    • Root ball quantity
    • Root barrier type
    • Root barrier length
    • Barrier depth
  4. Verify quantities against project requirements.

Outcome: Accurate root infrastructure data is available for documentation and project coordination.


8. Document the Design

  1. Place coordinated views onto sheets.
  2. Include:
    • Planting plans
    • Root barrier layouts
    • Root ball layouts
    • Schedules
  3. Verify consistency across:
    • Plans
    • Sections
    • Details
    • Schedules
  4. Publish project documentation.

Outcome: Root balls and root barriers are fully coordinated and documented.


Verification Checklist

  • ✅ Proposed trees have been placed.
  • ✅ Root balls have been created.
