Standard Workflow - Planting Mixes

Purpose

Use Planting Mixes to create, manage, and apply combinations of multiple plant species as a single planting design solution. Planting Mixes enable designers to define species compositions, planting ratios, densities, and specifications that can be reused across projects for shrub beds, herbaceous areas, groundcover planting, mixed borders, ecological landscapes, and urban greening schemes.

Planting Mixes provide consistency, improve efficiency, and support accurate quantity generation and schedule reporting.


Prerequisites

Before creating Planting Mixes:

  1. Required plant species are available within the project library.
  2. Plant data has been reviewed and verified.
  3. Planting design requirements and specifications have been established.
  4. Project palettes are available for storing planting content.
  5. Planting schedules and quantity reporting requirements have been identified.

Outcome: The project is ready for planting mix creation and management.


1. Define the Planting Strategy

  1. Review the landscape design objectives.
  2. Determine the intended planting type:
    • Mixed shrub planting
    • Herbaceous planting
    • Groundcover planting
    • Naturalistic planting
    • Ecological planting
    • Seasonal planting
  3. Identify the species required within the mix.
  4. Establish target planting densities and distribution requirements.

Outcome: The planting composition is defined before creating the mix.


2. Create a New Planting Mix

  1. Open the Planting Mix management tools.
  2. Select the option to create a new mix.
  3. Enter a unique mix name.
  4. Add a description identifying the intended use of the mix.
  5. Save the initial mix definition.

Outcome: A new planting mix is created and available for editing.


3. Add Plant Species to the Mix

  1. Open the mix editor.
  2. Select plant species from the available library.
  3. Add each species to the planting mix.
  4. Confirm all required plants are included.
  5. Save the updated mix.

Outcome: The mix contains all required plant types.


4. Define Planting Ratios

  1. Review the design intent for species distribution.
  2. Assign a proportion or percentage to each plant species.
  3. Verify that the combined allocation achieves the desired planting balance.
  4. Review visual diversity and performance objectives.
  5. Save the updated configuration.

Outcome: Species are distributed according to the planned design composition.


5. Configure Density and Quantity Parameters

  1. Define the planting density for the mix.
  2. Review:
    • Plants per square metre
    • Coverage requirements
    • Establishment objectives
    • Maintenance considerations
  3. Verify the density aligns with project specifications.
  4. Save the settings.

Outcome: The planting mix is configured for accurate area-based quantity generation.


6. Review and Edit the Mix

  1. Open the mix for review.
  2. Verify:
    • Species selection
    • Ratios
    • Density settings
    • Naming conventions
    • Specification information
  3. Adjust any values where necessary.
  4. Save the final version.

Outcome: The planting mix is ready for project use.


7. Add the Mix to a Project Palette

  1. Open the project palette.
  2. Add the completed planting mix to the palette.
  3. Organise the mix within the appropriate planting category.
  4. Save the updated palette.

Outcome: The planting mix becomes available within project workflows.


8. Apply the Planting Mix

  1. Select a placement workflow such as:
    • Area Pad
    • Overlay Region
    • Planting Areas
    • Landscape Beds
  2. Choose the required planting mix.
  3. Define the planting boundary.
  4. Apply the mix to the selected area.
  5. Review the generated planting arrangement.

Outcome: The planting mix is incorporated into the landscape design.


9. Review Quantities and Schedules

  1. Open project schedules.
  2. Refresh planting information.
  3. Review:
    • Plant species
    • Individual quantities
    • Mix composition
    • Planting areas
    • Density calculations
  4. Verify results against project specifications.

Outcome: Quantities are automatically calculated and coordinated.


10. Produce Project Documentation

  1. Update:
    • Planting Plans
    • Soft Landscape Plans
    • General Arrangement Drawings
    • Plant Schedules
    • Specification Documents
  2. Verify:
    • Mix names are consistent
    • Species quantities are accurate
    • Schedule information matches design intent
  3. Place schedules and views on project sheets.
  4. Publish project documentation.

Outcome: Planting Mixes are fully documented and coordinated across the project.
