Standard Workflow - Custom Plants

Purpose

Use Custom Plants to create plant content that is not available within the standard plant libraries. Custom Plants allow landscape architects and designers to represent unique species, project-specific planting requirements, nursery stock, proprietary cultivars, conceptual planting elements, or client-specific content while maintaining full scheduling, tagging, quantification, and BIM coordination capabilities.

Custom Plants ensure that all planting elements can be accurately represented within the project regardless of library availability.


Prerequisites

Before creating Custom Plants:

  1. Plant information has been obtained from project specifications, suppliers, or client requirements.
  2. Required botanical and common names have been confirmed.
  3. Plant size and performance information is available.
  4. Appropriate plant families or templates exist within the project.
  5. Project standards for naming and classification have been established.

Outcome: The project is ready for custom plant creation.


1. Identify the Need for a Custom Plant

  1. Review the planting specification.
  2. Identify species or cultivars that are unavailable within the existing plant library.
  3. Confirm the plant requires project-specific representation.
  4. Gather the required plant information.

Outcome: The custom plant requirements have been defined.


2. Create a New Custom Plant

  1. Open the Custom Plant creation tools.
  2. Select the option to create a new plant.
  3. Enter a unique plant name.
  4. Assign:
    • Botanical name
    • Common name
    • Plant category
    • Plant type
  5. Create the new plant record.

Outcome: A new custom plant is available for editing.


3. Define Plant Characteristics

  1. Open the plant editing interface.
  2. Populate available plant information including:
    • Height
    • Spread
    • Growth habit
    • Form
    • Evergreen or deciduous status
    • Planting specification information
  3. Enter any required project-specific data.

Outcome: The plant contains meaningful design and scheduling information.


4. Configure Plant Representation

  1. Review graphical display settings.
  2. Configure:
    • Plan representation
    • 3D appearance
    • Symbol display
    • Plant graphics
  3. Verify that the plant can be clearly identified within project views.

Outcome: The custom plant displays correctly throughout the model.


5. Assign Classification and Metadata

  1. Populate project information fields.
  2. Add:
    • Classification codes
    • Specification references
    • Supplier information
    • Maintenance information
    • Asset management data where required
  3. Verify all mandatory parameters are completed.

Outcome: The plant is compliant with project information requirements.


6. Save and Add to the Plant Palette

  1. Save the completed custom plant.
  2. Open the relevant project palette.
  3. Add the plant to the appropriate category.
  4. Organise the palette structure where necessary.

Outcome: The custom plant becomes available within project planting workflows.


7. Place the Custom Plant in the Model

  1. Select the custom plant from the palette.
  2. Choose the required placement workflow:
    • Individual Plant
    • Linear Path
    • Area Pad
    • Planting Mix
    • Overlay Region
  3. Place the plant within the model.
  4. Verify positioning and graphical representation.

Outcome: The custom plant is incorporated into the landscape design.


8. Review Plant Data and Performance

  1. Select placed instances of the custom plant.
  2. Review:
    • Plant information
    • Quantities
    • Tags
    • Schedule data
  3. Confirm that all information is reporting correctly.
  4. Update parameters if required.

Outcome: Custom plant data is functioning correctly within the project.


9. Generate Schedules and Quantities

  1. Open project planting schedules.
  2. Refresh planting information.
  3. Review:
    • Plant name
    • Quantities
    • Sizes
    • Specifications
    • Associated planting areas
  4. Verify schedule outputs against project requirements.

Outcome: Custom plant information is fully integrated into project schedules.


10. Produce Project Documentation

  1. Update:
    • Planting Plans
    • Landscape Plans
    • General Arrangement Drawings
    • Plant Schedules
    • Specification Documentation
  2. Verify consistency between:
    • Plant tags
    • Schedules
    • Specifications
    • Model content
  3. Publish project documentation.

Outcome: Custom Plants are fully documented and coordinated throughout the project.


Verification Checklist

  • ✅ Requirement for a custom plant has been confirmed.
  • ✅ A new custom plant has been created.
  • ✅ Botanical and common names have been assigned.
  • ✅ Plant characteristics have been populated.
